What I miss most of all “So What” attitude

December 4, 2013

Miles Davis jazz in the 1950’s made jazz more than cool. The arrangements by Gil Evans remain on the pinnacle of cool. SO WHAT always takes me to a place when jazz music from the USA ruled the world.

The concept of cool meant you did not need public adulation. The jazz music was never popular hit chart music. Mobs of bobby soxers screaming and weeping over Frank Sinatra was never in the sphere of cool. Miles Davis and a lot of the jazz greats were hard characters to love or admire. They were blazing a trail without courting commercial media claiming to be the “in crowd”.

Self promotion is boring and embarrassing. Since when is a fashion model a “SUPER MODEL”? Since when is a movie star a “SUPER STAR”? (Of course no one on television is a super anything! We haven’t lost all standards, yet!) Queen and king of self over promotion are Miley Cyrus and Kanye West without the talent to merit a second look.

I know we can never go back to bongos, jazz clubs, and the age of cool. Mr. Kelly’s in Chicago is long gone, and nobody even knows what it meant today. But it’s great to appreciate the music and genius talents that created the age of cool.

Chris Botti will be my Valentine gift for my wife for his trumpet is golden!

He took music into new territory!

Even though I know nothing about Jazz, I’ve heard of Davis through other genres; often by people who share your sentiments…

I agree with you about the state of music and ‘stars’ today. Nice post man.

Give a listen to Chris Botti with a sample track on line. I enjoyed “popular” music when we still had Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass make the charts. That music would get nowhere today.

Just listened to My Funny Valentine… It’s not what I’d usually listen to but I can certainly make time for that kind of sound. Thanks
